TRACK: No Pins Allowed
WHO: James Yuill – a man, a keyboard, a guitar and a nice line in folktronica.
WHAT: Dreamy beatsy poppy goodness.
HYPE: "Quite wonderful" - Popjustice
WE SAY: Now this is a delightfully refreshing affair. Following up the soothing synth massage table that was his debut single No Surprise, Yuill pushes the charm boat out further for his next release on Moshi Moshi.
No Pins Allowed is a flighty creation that bravely forges two disparate elements into one surprisingly enchanting package. With a love of both the elusive folk resonance of Nick Drake and the intricate weaving of French dance music, Yuill greedily decides to have his cake and dance to it by blending the two. It’s like Hot Chip appearing on Emmerdale. This must be what it must have been like when somebody first discovered that sweet and sour sauce works.
Raising the curtains with some reinforced beats and furious loops that sound not unlike The Prodigy at their spunkiest, Yuill then pours vocal melodic honey over it all as if to quell the fury. What follows is a battle for supremacy, as the twisted electronica threatens to subjugate the softer human elements into submission. In the end a truce is called, as even cold machinery cannot fail to be won over by the heartfelt majesty of a sumptuous tune.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Drop Yuill your email address via his myspace mailing list and the kind soul will furnish you with his version of Radiohead’s Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: No Pins Allowed is released on Moshi Moshi on July 21st.
