TRACK: Bright Red Helmet
WHO: Styrofoam – a man named Arne Van Petegem tackles a synthesiser and has a jolly sing over the unusual result.
WHAT: An animated blend of indie pop and electronica.
THE HYPE: “His voice has never seemed more confident and capable” – The Hype Machine.
WE SAY: It seems to have taken a wee while for this emotional Belgium-based producer to be recognised by a ‘worldwide’ label (Nettwerk Records). Featured on his sixth album, A Thousand Words, this up-tempo golden nugget confidently exhibits warm, and might I say ‘comfy’, vocals over rich synths and multi-layered melodies – resulting in a track as bright as the red helmet of its title.
Van Petegem appears to have broken away with aplomb from the somewhat depressed, as he puts it, “shy electronic guy afraid of singing” over “bedroom” production. The ingredients to this obscure soup, including some odd sounds and distorted bleeps, make it bubbly and surprisingly accessible.
Described as an ‘updated’ version of Kraftwerk mixed with a little Belle and Sebastian, those who favour groups such as New Order and Postal Service could do a lot worse than to set aside four minutes and 12 seconds to experience some bouncy electronic harmonies. You won’t be sorry for long.
Bright Red Helmet is, simply, a nice, happy single, the perfect summer song. All we need now is some, ahem, sunshine.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Styrofoam is currently touring with American indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Bright Red Helmet appears on the album A Thousand Words, out now. The new single is available to download for free from Styrofoam's MySpace page.
