TRACK: Money
WHO: The Splendour, a Brighton four-piece who may or may not be named after an artificial sweetener.
WHAT: Chunky, catchy, swaggering rock.
HYPE: "With the right backing they’ll be massive." - Q
WE SAY: There’s a great deal of splintering happening on Planet Indie at the moment; bands are either geezers, Eighties revisionists or too-cool-for-school teens. So a gentle tugging of the cap and a manly pat on the back to The Splendour for realising that sliding between those cliques pays dividends.
Produced by Dan Swift, who also gets to sprinkle pixie dust on Kasabian’s output, Money is a cocksure little number that, while it isn’t the least blokey thing you’ll ever hear, it’s tempered by a certain theatrical glamour, as the gristley riffs are dolled up with camp tuneful ribbons, cherry-on-topped by the vocals which are on affable speaking terms the languid meanderings of folk like Brett Anderson. Equipped with some mean-looking pop attitude, but with a fragrantly melodic demeanour, this is nailed on to be used in tv trailers in the very near future. Oh, they already have been picked out by Channel 4 for a trailer – sorry about that.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Zane Lowe’s a fan, he’s played them on his radio show and everything.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Money is released on July 28 on Tinyclan Records.
