TRACK: I Told Her On Alderaan
WHO: Super Furry Aliens Neon Neon.
WHAT: Retro futurism at its finest.
HYPE: “One of the catchiest choruses so far this year.” - Pitchfork
WE SAY: Sleek, stylish, and oh-so Eighties, that's how you'd describe the DoLorean car, made famous by the Back To The Future movies. It's also how you'd describe this track – taken from the Mercury Prize-nominated album, Stainless Style, which is inspired by the life of motor mogul John DeLorean, who developed the nifty little car. Sounds crazy, but it works. As you'd imagine, I Told Her On Alderaan is unashamedly Eighties, but it's far from cheesey. The songwriting talents of Gruff Rhys combine with Boom Bip's slick production skills to make this stand out from the other retro rip-offs doing the rounds today.
The catchy melodies and twangy riffs demand your attention – and they're nicely complemented by atmpospheric synths and clappy beats that make this impossible to get out of your head. Fans of electro pop with a clever kooky edge will love it. And thanks to the sci-fi nod, geeks will love it too (especially as Alderaan is the home planet of their ultimate pin-up, Princess Leia).
It's a thing of enigmatic beauty – much like the girl in the song, who we imagine is just one of the many lovelies romanced by playboy DeLorean. Sadly his life went down the dumper when the cars all turned out to be duds. But we expect a far brighter future for Neon Neon.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Pop whizzkid type Richard X has had a look under the bonnet and souped it up a touch with a killer remix.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: I Told Her On Alderaan is out now.
