TRACK: Lose My Cool
WHO: Jeremy Warmsley.
WHAT: Moody pop rock with a twist of electro.
THE HYPE: 'A stunning mixture of rock and electronica.' - Clash Music
WE SAY: Warmsley has achieved something that's quite rare these days - a truly unique sound. You could possibly call it folky rock, but to compare it to any band in that genre would be like comparing snow to mashed potato. It appears to be similar, but it's very different.
Lose My Cool mixes folk, rock and electronica in a very intriguing way - it's almost as if Warmsley has taken two songs and stuck them together.
It begins with an intricately composed piano intro (I still can't decipher that time signature). It then elegantly flows into a haunting, synthy verse that's set to a slow, industrial-sounding beat. So far, so beautiful. Especially the luscious vocals that have been generously doused in harmonies.
Then thump thump thump, the rocky chorus kicks in as Warmsley loses his cool and pleads his case to the sound of urgent electric guitars and frantic drums. "I've lost all sense of myself," he repeatedly proclaims – which is fitting, because the track itself seems to be unsure of its own identity. Yet, rather than sounding confused, it all adds up to a thing of wonderment.
The frenetic desperation builds up and up into an inspirational climax, when you sense Warmsley's pleaded so much that he's unable to hit one more note. And then it all goes quiet.
This single is taken from Warmsley's upcoming second album. He released The Art Of Fiction in 2006, but sadly the talent didn't transform into sales. This new offering has a much rockier, poppier chorus that should hopefully see him move into the mainstream and achieve the success he deserves.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Warmsley has been writing songs since he was 17, but in 2005 he decided everything he had written so far bored him. So he scrapped it all and started again, taking a more electronic approach to his music.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Lose My Cool is released on August 11 and you can get your hands on the new album, How We Became, in September.
