TRACK: Changes
WHO: Australian remixers Van She.
WHAT: Very good pop that it's OK to like.
THE HYPE: "A band that takes all these influences from days gone by but makes them sound unique, modern and fresh" - Last FM.
WE SAY: In the not too distant past, the term Australian pop would most probably have conjured up an image of warbling soap stars, such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and (shudder) Stefan Dennis. But that's all changing. First came electro kids Cut Copy and The Presets, now their Modular label-mates, Van She, have invaded our shores to get us bopping to their bleeps and beats.
Like Cut Copy, they have an Eighties influence that's achieved with an edge of cool rather than a cheesy array of pastiche. This is poppier though, as you'll notice immediately thanks to the Killers intro, but it soon unfolds to show off many levels. Changes is moody but uptempo, with synthy atmospherics and sparse guitars that become jangly and fuller for the chorus. It's the "Whooaa whooas" that grab you though - a simple but catchy hook. Pay attention to the rest of the lyrics too, there are some genius gems about apple juice and an ex's jeans in this ode to a break-up.
You sense that Van She really thought about what they were doing when they made this - every last element of the song feels well planned, and the slick production really gives it that extra polish. Plus there's more where this came from on their upcoming album, V, which boasts an eclectic mix of indie, electro, rock and pop. V good.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: The band have been likened to Soulwax, thanks to the remixes they do under the guise of Van She Tech. They have tinkered around with the likes of Ladyhawke and Klaxons and also made a stonking 24-minute version of Nineties dance classic Something Good By Utah Saints.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Changes is released on August 11, and V is out on August 9.
