TRACK: The Over Song
WHO: Moody Parisiennes JB Devay, Gregory Kowalski, David Nichols and Thomas Pirot, collectively known as Nelson.
WHAT: A timely reminder that there’s more to the French scene than filtered squelchy beats.
THE HYPE: “These guys are the premier French art-popsters” - NME
WE SAY: Having done so much to promote their peers via their Parisian club night at Bar 3, nobody could really quibble if these kids were to have a slice of the Gallic indie success cake that they spent so long baking.
Compared to everyone from Joy Division to The Rapture, what’s clear is theirs is a remarkably dense and intense proposition that really rewards patient ears.
Well-drilled and compellingly simplistic, The Over Song betrays their tough side, beats and raw guitars make angry slashes, while we’re repeatedly told by someone who sounds like a humpy Phil Oakey pretending to be in Kraftwerk that "This is not over". Of course, after about three minutes of increasingly layered strenuous feedback and glowering intensity it is all over, but not until you’ve been stunned into submission by its hypnotic strength.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: The Over Song will feature an impressive array of remixes from the likes of Chicken Lips, Midfield General, Black Mike and The Shoes.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: The Over Song is released September 22 on Ctrl Alt Del Records.
