Glasvegas: Daddy’s Gone Critics’ darlings last year, now being written off even before their debut album is out. This single is a fine riposte.
Pavilion: Spoils of War A new band from Wakefield, a new pop single to lose your heart to.
Slow Club: Let’s Fall Back in Love The Sheffield folk duo return, with a sing-along that’s both swoonsome and sinister.
Tigercity: Solitary Man A new signing to Ben Watt’s Strange Feeling label, this Brooklyn-based band do a lovely line in Hall & Oates electro-soul. DC
Must-have reissue: LIZ PHAIR: Exile in Guyville (ATO)
Few new musicians achieve quite the impact that this Chicago singer-songwriter managed with her debut in 1993. In the same year that PJ Harvey continued to blaze a Brit trail for alternately confrontational and stripped-bare-vulnerable fem-rock on Rid of Me, Exile in Guyville was Phair’s answer to Exile on Main Street, and certainly contains music Keith would be proud of. Rudimentary playing, lyrics arch, mocking or furious, break-up songs regretful (F*** and Run), bombastic (6’1”) and lethal (Divorce Song), music that spans art-rock, pop, folk and indie: it was an irresistible introduction, and Phair never hit such heights (or dug so deep) again.
