TRACK: Cheap Thrills
WHO: Hella-prolific Herve tags up with hot young things for good times.
WHAT: Plastic Little climb aboard the house train and set their sights on the Top 10.
THE HYPE: “Completely amazing” - Popjustice.
WE SAY: Ok, so a few of us journo types have been flapping our gums about the whole hipster rap thing, how its resuscitation of old school vibrancy has given hip-hop a botox jab to make it all jolly and smiley and all late Eighties again. The scene has been lifted by recent releases by Cool Kids and Kid Sister, but for it to really have any relevance, it needs to break out of the blogs and into the charts, otherwise it’ll just look like Romo all over again.
Plastic Little, bearing a Mark Ronson approval stamp on their behinds, look one of the more likely to breakout, partly because theirs is a more fresh club-friendly sound, with more four-four beats and electro squelch action housed in their armoury. They can say ta to producer Herve, one half of Count and Sinden, for much of that. Which they kind of have done by appearing on his single Cheap Thrills. Already doing some business as an instrumental, a solid, if a tad underwhelming house tune hanging on a sizable Michael Jackson lift, the guys have now added their stoopid fresh vibes to proceeding. Like Wiley and Dizzee before them, they’ve guested on a track that pushes them slightly outside of their comfort zone, but with a commercial success carrot just visible in front of them.
Their vocals seems a bit rushed and lost in the mix, making for a slightly muted foray into the unforgiving light of the mainstream, but worry not, the album Welcome To The Jang House is also due to drop, which features the punchy La La Land, another Herve joint. With it slightly kinder BPM and fluid electronic hot-tub production, it massages the boys' lowbrow schoolyard nonsense, rather than burying it.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Plastic Little is the name of a Japanese anime. Reading up on it on wikipedia hasn’t helped shed any light on anything – scantily clad kids, yada yada, boat that captures exotic creatures, yeah yeah, armies, scientists, saving the world. Great, that’s that cleared up then.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Cheap Thrills, released by Ministry, and Welcome To The Jang House, released on Half Time Records, are both released in September.
