THE HYPE: "Kinda like Bonnie Tyler minus the rasp" - Stereogum

WE SAY: The media's been awash with hype about ABBA this summer, what with the release of Mamma Mia! The movie. The critics are all-too keen to imply that the Swedish supergroup discovered a genius sound that no-one could ever recreate. Well, they're wrong.

Fantasy popsters Music Go Music take ABBA's sound and give it their own glittery polish. The Los Angeles-based band aren't all about the glam-pop though - they also throw in a combination of prog-rock, disco funk and mystical futurism, taking inspiration from Queen, ELO and Stevie Wonder along the way.

Reach Out kicks off in dramatic style with a cheese-tastic riff, then goes on to playfully prance between genres at will and change tempos seamlessly. The ABBA sound is strong, but the octave effects on the guitars make this come over all soft-rock power ballad in places too. This should sound far too shambolic, but somehow Music Go Music have the skills and the technical knowhow to pull it off. The galloping pace of the song grabs hold of your consciousness and swirls it around at a fast, energetic speed, while singer Gala Bell urges you to "reach out with all your mind" and follow her to a brighter, better land. She's like a modern-day Tinkerbell, sprinkling you with fairy dust and giving you the ability to fly. A Tinkerbell who rides a winged unicorn through dry ice and pyrotehnics that is.

It's easy to picture Reach Out in a musical of its own. I imagine Gala Bell would be standing alone in a dismal forest for the verse, thrusting her power fist into the air. Then for the upbeat chorus, the stage would come alive with light and roller-skating dancers. The lyrics promise to take you to a happy place, and they don't fall short of achieving that. This song is a joy for every moment of its epic six minutes and 17 seconds.

IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Reach Out may sound like it was written by a combination of ABBA and cock-rockers in spandex with bad blonde perms, but Music Go Music is actually the secret side project of an accomplished indie band. They go under the pseudonyms of Gala Bell, Kamer Maza, and TORG, but their real names remain a mystery for now.
