Following their much-lauded reunion concert in London last year, Led Zeppelin could be about to answer fans’ prayers after Jason Bonham revealed members of the seminal rock band are back in the studio.
The son of the band’s late original drummer, John Bonham, who took his father’s station at the reunion concert, told an American radio station that he has been recording with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones since December’s sold-out gig at the O2 Arena.
The drummer told Detroit station 94.7 WCSX that writing new material has been "on the cards" since the London concert and that he had been flying from the US to the UK to record with the pair.
"At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material," he said.
"When I get there [in the studio] I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it.
But the absence of singer Robert Plant from the recording sessions will disappoint fans and make it unlikely that any resulting album could be marketed as a Led Zeppelin release.
Despite critical acclaim and public praise following the reunion concert, Plant eschewed a Led Zeppelin tour to continue playing with bluegrass musician Alison Krauss. The pair, who have enjoyed unexpected success after collaborating on the album Raising Sand, are currently touring the US.
Plant’s absence has not dampened Bonham’s enthusiasm. "Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It's my life. It's what I've dreamed about doing."
But he hinted that a Led Zeppelin album was not out of the question: "Lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out [before an album could be made]."
Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 and quickly became rock royalty before disbanding in 1980 following John Bonham's death.

it will always be great news, still not the same, it was a time and a place for everything, but... and I agree, Jones, Page, Plant and Bonham were Led Zeppelin, so it will never come back!
samuel, Lugo, Spain
why bother Jeff? because JPJ and Plant do the music, which is fantastic... look at Moby Dick
sure it wouldn't be the same, but I'd rather see that than nothing... and some quality material might just lure Plant back...
Irwin, Eastbourne,
JPJ is by no means the heart of LZ. Have you ever heard the late sessions by Plant&Page you will know what I mean. Plant&Page is more or less Led Zeppelin. So without one of them there is no Led Zeppelin.
peter, london,
Jay, I disagree with you...Page, Jones, Plant and Bonham are Led Zeppelin and if they choose to be, they're Led Zeppelin again. Robert, I agree, John Paul Jones is the "heart" of the band!
Dave, Twinsburg, Ohio, USA
Without Plant, why bother????
Jeff b, Margate, FL
If led zeppelin dos come out with a new album I am sure it will be loads better then the any thing Plant or pages have done, just because they brought in JPJ!!! that in it self will make any album they come out with great!
Robert, Seattle, USa
This isn't LED ZEPPELIN!!!!!! Anyone who is a fan of this band knows Zep died the night Jonh Bonham Did. Call Them the New Led Zeppelin, Just like Jimmy formed the NEW Yardbird.
Jay, Cook, USA
I certainly believe Plant has enough pipes left to sound good in a digital studio environment. Look at Ozzy. Auto-tune is an amazing tool for live performances. I think it would be an incredibly successful endeavor. C'mon peeps.....who doesn't wanna go to a ZEP show? "Been a long time."
Darren, Tulsa, United States
Plant is arrogant to ignore this after they were so GREAT at the O2 Arena. For Gods sake, he has made his point with the Alison Krauss thing. Ill bet if you asked Allison, she would love to see Led Zep record again.
Randall Tex Cobb, Destin, USA
I am in two minds: any new performance would not be a shadow of the original Zeppelin (I was there at Knebworth in 1979, when John was still with us), but then again - better to have even a tiny hint of their original power than nothing at all. As to Plant's solo career? Try naming the hits!
Ian Penman, London, England
Led Zeppelin were deflating by the time that they recorded their last couple of albums and were virtually a spent force. Individually they released a few lacklustre solo records, Jimmy Page's 'Outrider' being a particular low point. Together Page and Plant suceeded with the 'No Quarter' project.
Colin Beardshall, Barnsley, England
As much as I love Zep, a reunion would destroy the legend, like those of all the other dinosaur acts currently cashing in. When Plant initially refused to reunite long term, I was most impressed at the man's integrity. Dont do it!
Brendan, Perth, Australia
Plant's got a whole career independent of Zep and been more creatively successful than any British musician of his era doing it. He's resisted cheap nostalgia, big bucks and industry pressure to go his own way and not trade off the past. He's probably a more fulfilled person as a result. Stay solo!
Chad, London, UK
They are most likely recording the music @ will later have Robert come in write the lyrics@record vocals into the tracks.Have more faith. In the past they have recorded songs as a jam @ redo it over with new changes in the music @ add the vocals. Its just a creative process@ great marketing hype!
Ron Rice, Las Vegas, USA
I'd have to agree with Tom's speculation, who knows, it could even be a press thing... Keeping the fans wanting. Nonetheless, I hope that Robert Plant comes around no matter what the hold up.
Christian James, San Diego, US
well an album ,i think, is an excuse to tour.
david, indiana,
I just read the article...can't they wait til Robert finishes touring with Alison Krauss first? why rush it? Or is it just their company wanting to cash in on their touring that they've done recently and quickly, hastily... release an album that would be mediocre and become the fall of such a phenomenal, legendary, globally respected band??? Is it about the love of the music or the love of the money??? Good things come to those who wait....wait for Robert!
Anna, Adelaide, Australia
Jason must be living the dream. I have my fingers crossed!
Mark, Franca, Brazil
Andy...Andy...Andy...
the politics referred to is the fact that Robert Plant doesn't really want to get back with Led Zeppelin and their are frictions and other commitments...
oh, and you've insulted all muscians everywhere with that comment... if its so easy, where's your legendary rock band?
Irwin, Eastbourne,
I keep up on the possibility of a Zeppelin tour in the future & I knew Plant was tied up until September, I gotta believe he knew they were gonna be workin on some new material & Robert Plant could put down some awesome lyrics in a snap of the fingers.I think it's gonna happen !!!
D-J, Clearwater, America
It says it right there in the article. He is touring right now with Alisson Krauss. It has always been speculated that any Zepplin project would have to wait till after that commitment was over. I think hearing about them recording is a very positive sign.
Kurt Earnest, Bakersfield, USA
So Plant isn't in the studio. With digital downloads Page and Jones could be sending material to him all the time to enable him to work on lyrics etc. Then when the time is right he goes into the studio. I believe that this was Plant's price to tour with Zeppelin; new material. Fingers Crossed!
Craig Hall, Preston, UK
Robert Plant may decide to add his weight behind the project later on when he sees what the others come up with. He probably told them to come up with some worthy tunes first. As songwriters, Page and Jones have more to prove, since they've been out of regular rock circulation for a while.
Tom, Birmingham, UK
"Lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out [before an album could be made]."
What a load of artistic bull...
Somebody play a few chords, add a beat and some bass...hey, what about some lyrics...There ya go!
Andy Montgomery, Töre, Sweden
