TRACK: Kill Me Now.
WHO: Nineties throwbacks Underground Railroad.
WHAT: Psychedelic indie rock.
THE HYPE: "It marries the teeth-shattering ferocity of Pixies at their most pissed off with radio-slaying, agit-pop melodies" - The Fly.
WE SAY: The music scene is a mixed bag of electro bleeps, innovative pop and Eighties nostalgia at the moment, so we should have known that the critics would find a new guitar band with a good old-fashioned, Nineties psychedelic indie sound to champion. And that group it would seem is Underground Railroad.
The band - who hail from France, but are based in London - are gathering steam and column inches with a sound that is like a mash-up of The Dandy Warhols, Feeder and Pixies, with a bit of The Velvet Underground thrown in for good measure.
Bearing those influences in mind, there's no wonder upcoming single Kill Me Now has such a confident Nineties swagger. The constant walking bass line, silky vocals and floaty guitars just stop this from turning into a frenetic rocking track, and it favours the polished poppy side of the decades' indie pack. This has got a groove that will please reminiscing adults and hopefully convince a few nu-rave kids to discover real instruments too.
Judging by the current buzz, Underground Railroad are at the tipping point where they may - or may not - become the next new darlings of the indie press. It will be interesting to see what they pull out of the bag next.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: Underground Railroad's upcoming album, Sticks And Stones, was produced by John Goodmanson, who has worked with the likes of Sleater Kinney, Soundgarden and Blonde Redhead. They also recorded it in Seattle, the birth place of all things grunge. We hope they get the chance to follow in the footsteps of some of the city's finest sons.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Kill Me Now is released by One Little Indian on September 15. The album Sticks And Stones follows on September 29
