TRACK: Lovers Of Today.
WHO: Sister.
WHAT: Raw, rocking indie pop with attitude.
THE HYPE: "Sister have all the jigsaw pieces to be huge. Nothing is missing." - Bangingdrum.com
WE SAY: If you like plaintive, moody indie that you can shoegaze to, you'll love Sister. Lovers Of Today sounds like it was influenced by Joy Division, but this is a more evolved poppy song, made with plenty of optimism. Whereas Ian Curtis would have been spiralling into a pit of despair, vocalist Gemma Banks is singing her way out of it. She's like a modern-day mix of Siouxsie Sioux, Debbie Harry and Chrissie Hynde, but with a quirky Fifties style that's all her own. Her amazingly high hairstyle has to be seen to be believed, and admired.
Lovers Of Today effortlessly drives along in a surreal, robotic fashion while an atmospheric Hammond organ whistles along. Meanwhile, Gemma confidently warbles in sync with the guitars. This is like Joy Division with a tender woman's touch, but it's got bags of attitude too.
Gemma sings "we're making it in our own way", which is apt. Sister have taken inspiration from past eras, including punk, new wave and rock 'n' roll, but they have fused it all together to make music in their own way - hopefully they're making the big time in their own way too.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: If you like Lovers Of Today, there's more where this came from. Check out Sister's MySpace to hear their take on old-fashioned rock 'n' roll, with Gemma beautifully crooning her heart out. Plus, Pure Groove are currently giving away a free download of Down Down.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Lovers Of Today is out now as a limited edition 10" and they're giving away the mp3 too.
