Richard Wright, a founder member of Pink Floyd, died yesterday at the age of 65 after battling cancer, his spokesman said.
Wright played the keyboard with the legendary band and wrote music for classic albums Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here.
His spokesman said: "The family of Richard Wright, founder member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness, that Richard died [yesterday] after a short struggle with cancer.
"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time."
Wright's spokesman did not say from what form of cancer the star had been suffering.
David Gilmour, Pink Floyd’s guitarist, used his online blog yesterday to pay tribute to Wright, telling fans: “I really don’t know what to say other than that he was such a lovely, gentle, genuine man and will be missed terribly by so many who loved him. And that’s a lot of people. Did he not get the loudest, longest round of applause at the end of every show in 2006?”
He added later: “No one can replace Richard. He was my musical partner and my friend. I have never played with anyone quite like him.
“In my view all the greatest PF moments are the ones where he is in full flow. After all, without Us and Them and The Great Gig in the Sky, both of which he wrote, what would The Dark Side of the Moon have been? Without his quiet touch the album Wish You Were Here would not quite have worked. I loved him and will miss him enormously.”
A flood of tributes from fans, who were unaware of his illness, also appeared on the web. “He is by far one of the most underrated musicians in rock and his keyboard work will never be forgotten,” wrote Howard Bayliss.
The self-taught keyboardist and pianist met fellow band members Roger Waters and Nick Mason while at architecture school.
He was a founder member of The Pink Floyd Sound in 1965, and the group's previous incarnations, such as Sigma 6.
In the early days of Pink Floyd, Wright, along with Syd Barrett, was seen as the group's dominant musical force.
The London-born musician and son of a biochemist wrote and sang several songs of his own.
The Great Gig In The Sky, and Us And Them, both from 1973's seminal Dark Side Of The Moon album, were his most well-known compositions.
He also made essential contributions to Atom Heart Mother, Echoes and Shine On You Crazy Diamond, the tribute to former band member Barrett.
Wright recorded his first solo project, Wet Dream, in 1978.
After his relationship with Waters became increasingly difficult, he left Floyd following sessions for the album The Wall.
Wright was retained as a salaried session musician during live concerts in 1980 and 1981.
In 1983, Pink Floyd released the only album in which Wright does not appear - The Final Cut.

He will be sadly missed.
Peppino, London, UK
The day has finally arrived! The musicians us baby boomers grew up with are dying of old age. At certain points in ones life mortality reaches out like a cold hand from the grave and reminds us we best enjoy every moment as our last. I have had a million moments of enjoying Pink Floyd. Thanks!

My heart is broken. I grew up with Pink Floyd. He seemed like such a gentle, kind man and very talented. The world will miss Rick. He can't be replaced.
Lisa Purves, Fredericton, NB, Canada
Its at times like these you realise that the classic rock musicians, dispite still touring and playing as if there were no tomorrow, are approaching old age and unfortunately, like us all,are only mortal.Lets be happy that there are many still with us and appreciate them while they're still here.
Chris, Aberdeen, Scotland
I've read the news....

What can one at a time like this? Richard is gone. Thats it. there is nothing more. Will he join Syd in "The great gig in the sky"? Who knows. What he left us was a life time of great memories. He touched each of us in a different way. Shine on you crazy dimond !
Matt Winans, Onaway, Mi., USA
What a shock to hear that one of the greatest musicians in rock history passed away. Rick was my favorite of the group and he really made their music 3-dimensional. My condolences to the Wright family and the members of Pink Floyd. Thank you Richard for all the music and memories. Rest in peace.
Mike, Wisconsin, United States
The World was a better place while he was with us. He indeed, left this World a better place now that he has moved on. I am deeply saddened, yet ever so grateful for having known him through his music. My heart and prayers go out to his bandmates, and his family. God Bless you all.
Casey Taylor, Luling, Texas, U.S.A.
I clearly recall Richard saying in a television interview that no one person in the band was bigger than Pink Floyd, whilst referring to a disagreement with other band member, Roger Waters. I disagree, The Pink Floyd sound can never be reproduced by a band with no Richard Wright, Rest in peace.
David Wells, Thetford, Norfolk
A very sad day indeed. I will always think of him as "Sheep" plays over and over in my head. I will truly miss him.
Rob Sellers, Mt. Airy, USA
What a sad day. A great musician, a great band, a great shock that one of my heroes has passed away. Condolences to his loved ones, the shock is real, R.I. P. Richard.

Very, very sad. To quote Syd: "Please lift a hand, I'm only a person".
i hope Rick and Syd are enjoying an eiderdown ride in heaven.
greg, newcastle,
An excellent musician who contributed greatly to the Pink Floyd sound. His wave of shimmering keyboards let Gilmour's guitar work soar.
Thanks a lot for making people happy, Rick.
Elliot, London,
Shine on Rick and thanks to you and PF for making some of the best moments and tunes in rock history
matt crane, Godstone, UK

Sergio, Argentina,
What a shock!!! I have listened to floyd longer than anyone else in music, My condolences to the family and all the fans who loved the music,
Shine on Richard.
Richard Burton, Rotherham, England
My first album, was Meddle. I had the good fortune to see Pink Floyd live twice. Knebworth (Dark side of the Moon) in quadrophonic and Wembley. They were unforgettable moments in my life. The "stamp" of a great band is when they sound better live than on tape,cd or lp.
ash deo, lincoln, england
Dear Rick,
I miss you. I'm having tears in my eyes even as I'm keying in these letters. The rest of the band should compose a song in your honour, "Wish you were still here."
Right now I'm listening to your masterpiece of an album, 'Wet Dream'. What a voice!!!
Good bye dear Mr. Richard Wright...
Murali, Chennai, India

Magical and unforgettable,.
Sadly missed.
Howard Leech, Gdansk, Poland
I feel like I've lost a good friend, an elder brother, a wise teacher. A good man has left us.
Now there will be no more Pink Floyd on this planet, they just belong to the past.
And this makes me cry of sorrow and anger.
You made me grow and learn.
Thanks and goodbye, dear Mr. Wright

The passing of Syd Barrett ended an era, the loss of Richard Wright ends another. Something about RW's songs always brings me up a notch, fills my soul and takes me on a wonderful timeless journey. My prayers to his family and I only hope he and Syd reunite for one more 'Great Gig In The Sky".

frederic, Tahiti, French Polynesia
So sad. From his keyboard work such as Echoes, I often felt a traditional Japanese touch Ma" or exquisite momentary silence between each note. As Gilmour respectfully remembers, there was no keyboardist like him. RIP Ric.
