TRACK: Where Do You Run To (listen here)
WHO: Three-piece Brooklyn scuzz foundry Vivian Girls.
WHAT: A symphony in fuzz guitar.
HYPE: “We can’t stop listening to Vivian Girls.” - Stereogum
WE SAY: Does Tarantino have a film due any time soon? Not sure, but we might just have done the most important part of his job for him and found the first song for the soundtrack. QT scores tend to be chocka with big, grimey numbers steeped in tremeloes and surf motifs, so this scuzzy gem should do the trick wonderfully.
That’s woefully minimising the merits of this glorious bunch of six-string toting femme dynamos, and if I ever meet them I shall apologise – mainly cos they have arms festooned with those scrawly tattoos that Amy Winehouse favours and they have badass-sounding names like Cassie Ramone and Katy Kickball, and could feasibly get medieval on my ass or at least know people who could.
Hailing from Brooklyn New York (look, I know – ‘enough already with the Noo Yoik bands’, but what can I do? As long as it remains as aggressively creative a city, the bands will be on here), this grrrl band make such a beautiful cacophonous din that it beggars belief. While there’s clearly a whole Link Wray-meets-the Shangri-Las-at-the-drive-in retro American affair chalked up, the band dress it down with lashings of skinny-jeans C86, post-punk, Mary Chain and Sonic Youthy angularness – a textbook case of a velvet glove cast in iron.
The beauty of it all is the rough-and-ready garage delivery of untreated guitars and primal drums manages to both jar and gel with the honeyed harmonised vocals, which whiff of the dreamy shoegaziness of 4AD band Lush, as they filter through the cavernous Phil Spector echo chamber.
Now all we need to do is wait for the lantern-jawed auteur to pull his finger out and these girls are sorted.
IF I ONLY KNOW ONE THING: Having recently opened for Sonic Youth and Fucked Up, the girls are invading these very shores later this year, culminating in gigs at Madame Jojos and the Proud Gallery in mid-December.
WHERE CAN I GET IT: Their album is released stateside on In The Red records on October 7th. The good people at Rough Trade will be able to sort you with a copy when that happens.
