TRACK: The Greatest Escape We Ever Made.
WHO: Wave Machines.
WHAT: Laid-back beats that just want to have fun.
THE HYPE: 'A group of emotional (but not emo) indie-disco scousers whose cowbell and cheap synth-toting pop is the sort made by twee, Oxfam-clothed kids (very successfully) trying their hand at white funk' -Time Out.
WE SAY: Wave Machines. No, not the swimming pools you got to splash around in at water parks as a kid, this is a band from Liverpool. They're just as fun though.
The Greatest Escape We Ever Made is fantastic twee indie with a laid-back, Hot Chip-esque polish to it. It's packed full of effects, including synths, toe-tapping beats and a groovy bassline.
This song gives nods to a multitude of influences, offering an effortless mix of Seventies and Eighties-style sounds. It's all very slick yet flamboyant, then suddenly the quirky, energetic interlude towards the end takes you by surprise, combining a Talking Heads-style marching beat with the singer's falsetto warblings. Brilliant. This will surely have any rivals turning green with envy.
It's so infectious it's the kind of song your slightly too drunk and enthusiastic friend might play on repeat at their next kitchen party - and yet you'll never tire of it. This euphoric disco-pop explosion is just too fab, fun and downright funky.
Wave Machines might sound like they don't take themselves too seriously, but that's clearly not the case with their music. Escape from it all and dive right in.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: The band really do like to mix it up - they switch their frontmen for different songs, keeping their sound fresh and new.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: The Greatest Escape We Ever Made is released October 27 on Chess Club records.
