A less likely encounter in the BBC coverage of the US presidential race was between Jeremy Paxman, curly lipped Newsnight anchor, and Dizzee Rascal, hip-hop artist.
Paxman: “How does this seem to you?”
Rascal: “Hip-hop played a big part in this as well, I don’t think [Barack Obama] could have won this without hip-hop.”
P: “You’re rather positive.”
R: “Yeah man, why not man? If you believe, you can achieve, innit?”
P: “Do you believe in political parties in this country?”
R: “Yeah, they exist, I believe in them. I don’t know if I care.”
P: “Mr Rascal, do you feel yourself to be British?”
R: “Of course I’m British. You know me. I think, it don’t matter what colour you are, it matters what colour your heart is, man. I think a black man, purple man, Martian man could run the country, whatever man, as long as he does right by his people.”
P: “Why don’t you run for office?”
R: “See, that’s a very good idea. I might have to do that one day. Dizzee Rascal for prime minister, yeah! What’s happening?”

He may not have come across the most intelligent or eloquent of people, but the points he made were spot on! How can you look down on or criticise someone saying that it doesn't matter what colour your skin is, it's the way you act and the things you believe in? Go "Mr Rascal", I say.
Loz, London, United Kingdom
Give me a break. A black man comes on TV and represents himself as intelligent, opinionated and positive and we knock him down.
So if he was some gun/knife/drugs carrying stereotype or politician whinging about racism, do we approve?
Positive attitudes like this got Obama elected!
Matthew, Cambridge,
I couldn't agree more with Adrian, it was cringeworthy. You could tell Paxman wasn't relishing interviewing him! Call me less than optimistic, but I don't think Barack would have become disheartened by a lack of hip-hop in his life...
James, London,
Does a lack of 'eloquence' prohibit you from having an opinion and expressing it? Dizzee was refreshingly eloquent and most certainly made an impact on me , and I am no spring chicken. He bypassed all the political speak and spoke as he saw it, and i liked what he said. Dizzee does it!!
Lizzie, Huddersfield, UK
Watched this show and cringed. At a great time like this you put the least eloquent of speakers on to represent black people. Thanks.
