Watch Mitch talk about Hendrix | Watch Hendrix at Woodstock
John ‘Mitch’ Mitchell, the English drummer and last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, has died.
In true rock and roll fashion Mr Mitchell was still touring with the Experience Hendrix tribute tour when he was found dead in his hotel room in Oregon, in the US, on Wednesday. The 61-year-old is believed to have died from natural causes.
Mr Mitchell, who was born in Ealing, Middlesex, was the last surviving member of the trio who helped pioneer the psychedelic rock scene in the 1960s. Mr Hendrix died in 1970 and guitarist and bass player Noel Redding in 2003.
A medical examiner found that Mr Mitchell had died of natural causes after his body was found in his Portland hotel room by an employee.
Janie Hendrix, Jimi's step sister, who is the chief executive of the Experience Hendrix tour, described Mr Mitchell as a “wonderful man, brilliant musician and a true friend.”
“His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated,” she said.
“Over the course of the recent tour, he seemed delighted with the interchange with the other musicians and the audiences. There is no question he was doing what he loved.”
Mr Mitchell, who started in showbiz as a child actor, met Mr Hendrix, one of the world’s most famous guitarists, in 1966 in a basement strip club in London’s Soho. Soon afterwards, along with bass player Noel Redding, they formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience, a band which would go on to transform rock and roll.
Known as one of rock’s most explosive percussionists who helped create a fusion style of drumming which combined rock and jazz, Mr Mitchell played on Mr Hendrix’s celebrated albums Are You Experienced and Electric Ladyland, which produced some of the guitarist's most famous songs including Purple Haze, Foxy Lady and Hey Joe.
He also played with Mr Hendrix during his now legendary performances at the Monterey, Isle of Wight and Woodstock festivals and played in The Dirty Mac, a supergroup assembled for The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus in 1968 which contained John Lennon, Eric Clapton and Keith Richards.
Mr Mitchell performed in LA two weeks ago and appeared happy and healthy. He had planned to stay in Portland for a four-day holiday, said Bob Merlis, a spokesman for the Experience Hendrix tour.
The tour brought together veteran musicians who had known Mr Hendrix, and younger artists.
“It was a devastating surprise,” said Mr Merlis. “Nobody drummed like he did.”
Mr Merlin said Mr Mitchell was a one-of-a kind drummer. “If Jimi Hendrix were alive today he would have acknowledged that,” he said.
In a 1998 interview Mr Mitchell said he and Mr Hendrix’s musical chemistry was instant and they enjoyed a “mutual respect for each other”.
“There were no boundaries, there were no limits at all,” he said.
“Jimi was irreplaceable, both as a friend and a musician. I miss him as much today.”
Just last month Mr Mitchell told the Boston Herald that he continued to play and tour with the Hendrix tribute tour because: “I’m also one of those really lucky people that still loves playing drums.”

If I could be just one tenth as good as you Mitch, I'd be bloody brilliant. Rest in peace mate and thanks for the insipiration.

Johnny Mitch Mitchell was drummer in a band with my brother Ken Rankine, West London, early sixties well before he met Jimmy Hendrix. His family lived over a shop down the road from my parents and used to hear him practising the drums. He was often round our house. Thinking of his mum still here
Linda Reynolds, Portland, united kingdom

mitch mitchell was a true inspiration for many generations of drummers. his technique, imagination and raw energy were second to none at a time when rock drumming was only begining to define itself. love and respect.
simso, london, uk
The Greatest of the Rock Era Drummers. He fused Rock with Blues, and Jazz. That's one of reasons for his Greatness. All of todays drummers need to listen to him. Now the entire group is gone, but never forgotten. The Experience will continue to inspire musicians forever.
Eric Williams, Torrance, CA, USA
For me, Mitchell sums up what the best in sixties drumming was about - jazz trained, which you could see and hear in his style, yet as funky as hell and he could rock. It was great to see the technique, fluidity and feel in his playing. Too much of today's drumming is leaden and dull in comnparison
Rob, Edinburgh , UK
I got to spend about 15 minutes with him last week at the hotel I work in Spokane, WA. He was a delightful person to be around. i went to his room to to assist him with his things for the show that night. He kept wanting to chat with me even though the driver called and was waiting in the lobby.
Mike Fields, Spokane Valley, US
Jim, my cousin, and I saw the show Thursday night in Seattle. We didn't know at the time, but it was our finall goodbye to a great musician and man. We loved Jimmy, the people who played with him and had a bond with all that were luckey enough to have seen The Experience. Rest in peace.
Rob Kinney, Seattle, USA
Rest in peace Mitch. No other drummer has done a better job of fusing jazz and rock together. Even after hearing the music for 20 years I'm still blown away by the hand speed, the explosiveness, unusual approaches and the uptempo playing. Mitch has influenced just about everyone on the instrument.
Ben Charnley, Melbourne, Australia
Absolutely no one had the explosive and unique drumming style of Mitch Mitchell. WIth all respect to Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, and Jon Bonham, .... Mitch was the world's greatest drummer without equal.
Charles Wilson, Woodbridge VA, USA
Peace out man
Phill, The Wirral, England
Mitch, I'll always remember the band's great shows in San Francisco. And playing Electric Ladyland for my friends on the day it was released at my birthday party in 1968, combined with a total eclipse of the moon and some potent koolaid, was a transcendent experience, best birthday ever. Thanks!
Steve Murray, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
Rest in Peace, Mitch.
Thank you for all your wonderful artistic contributions. You will be missed! See you in the next world.
JJ, Fairfax, USA
Rock on Brother!!!!!!!!!!!!
JJS, ATL,
I would like to pay my respects to Mitch. He was a great drummer with a great style who commanded respect. I started drumming in the sixties and like Mitch I enjoy drumming immensly. We are the same age so it comes as a shock to hear of his untimely death. God bless you brother.
Paul Grogan, Redditch, England
Mitchell was one of the best drummers to ever play pop/rock, he kept up with Hendrix all the way. His style was similar to, but technically better than, Keith Moon. Listen to "Fire" or "Third Stone from the Sun". The J H Experience must be among the first major 60s bands with all members gone.
Paul, Aberdeen, Scotland
What a sad development. Can't believe all three are gone. Only 61 years old Great that he was still enjoying it and doing what he loved. Definitely unique and as important to the Experience sound as anything. RIP
Joe, Toronto, Canada
His complex yet beautiful drumming style on the album Axis Bold as Love has fascinated me since I was an early teenager.
What an inspirational trio, truly irreplaceable.
Thank you Mitch, Noel and Jimi.
Nick, Camden, UK
There'll be some reunion jam in Heaven tonight,, the greatest electric guitar player in history , past and future,, finally re-united with his cohorts ,, God bless them ,, and long live Rock and Roll !!
John, Dublin, Ireland
I think it's the jazz element of Mitch's drumming that really set the Experience apart from their contemporaries. Legendary drummer, in my opinion more varied and unique than Bonham.
Andrew Leadbetter, Warwick, UK
Sad, sure. But these guys are imortalised! Footprints in the sand indeed! Their music will never die. Everytime someone like this dies, CD sales go up and a whole load of new curious people get to hear the music. Rock on!
Lucas Tatek, Herts., uk
He was an amazing drummer with a unique sound.
