TRACK: Already Over
WHO: Violens
WHAT: The joyful soundtrack to your daydreams.
THE HYPE: "Violens... make hallucinatory, '60s inspired pop records akin to of Montreal imagining kicking it with the Zombies and Joe Meek back in the day." - RCRD LBL.COM
WE SAY: Violens make beautiful music, there's no denying that. Already Over's acoustic guitar and shuffling skiffle beat lend it a touch of The Jam, only with a much more epic, strange feel thanks to the eerie woodwind that plays along in the background.
With its psychedelic sounds, this is also like a dreamy 1960s pop song, and it's dripping with sweet, soothing harmonies. Iddo Arad sings tangled, freeform vocals that are sensitive yet masculine and somewhat like a mellower Killing Joke. Meanwhile, diverse rhythms merge sleepily together in the dark, while the tempo darts, flips and twists waywardly in and out of your consciousness.
Already Over is a sumptuous, joyful dreamscape of a song that only proves to get better each time you listen to it.
Check out the rest of the tracks on Violens' MySpace, too, for there's more beautiful music where this came from. Each song is impressively different while retaining that same soft, floaty sound that the band do so well. Their influences appear to be as varied as The Smiths, Interpol, The Strokes and The Byrds. Violens certainly aren't a band keen to be pigeonholed into any one scene, and they are definitely ones to watch.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: New Yorkers Violens have also made a brilliant remix of MGMT's Time To Pretend.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Already Over is the lead track on Violens' debut EP, which is out now on Deadly Recordings.
