TRACK: New Flowers
WHO: Tanlines
WHAT: Bleepy electronica with bombastic Latin beats and a Commodore Amiga screech (well, it almost rhymed).
THE HYPE: See below. No really, see below because apparently no one apart from hardcore music junkies and people looking for weird stuff through google has even the slightest clue that Tanlines exists. Hopefully that'll change though...
WE SAY: As a red-headed freckled albino that spends the majority of his hot sunny days indoors reading books and dunking bourbons, I'm not best placed to wax lyrical about tan lines. Scorch lines? Yes. Burn lines? Certainly. Seared-to-within-an-inch-of-life-wet-flannel-on-face-and-facing-death lines? You betcha. Er, tan lines? Not a chance. The thing is, I do know good music when I hear it and New Flowers is a brace-bustingly belting track that I'm so sure will get your head a-twitching and a-swaying like one of those plastic nodding Nuns you find in dodgy pound shops, I'll have to muddle in and give it my best shot.
Tanlines (the band) is Jesse Cohen (of Professor Murder) and Eric Emm (of Storm & Stress and one half of the Brothers production team) from Brooklyn. If you're a switched-on music-is-my-master sycophantic zealot, you'll have heard their remix of Telepathe's Chromes On It from earlier this year. If you're not then you won't have and that's okay too because I hadn't heard it either - and I've heard David Hasselhoff's cover of Madonna's La Isla Bonita, so was thinking I was pretty clued up.
Hard-pumping Euro-pop Latin beats, Daft Punk synth licks, Aphex Twin sequencing, Paul Hardcastle (yes, him) melodies, Howard Jones (yes, HIM!) pop sensibilities, old computer loops, Zoot Woman arpeggios, silly Eighties toys samples: it's all here and it's all wonderful. The ghostly vocals are a treat too: hypnotic, yet mysteriously chilling at the same time, so if I'm in danger of making New Flowers sound happy and cheery be warned: it's cool, it's chilled and it's easy, but it ain't Barbie Girl by Aqua, yeah?
The guys are artists too, citing YouTube as the best record label ever; which is why if you go to that particular corner of the digital playground, you'll not only hear, but see New Flowers in all its glory. In the end, it looks and sounds like something those crazy Swedes The Knife would record if they were electro hippies rather than the gloriously miserable siblings we know and love. Put simple, it's an infectious pop record that's perfect here-comes-the-weekend or there-goes-the-weekend material (delete as applicable). Thanks a bunch guys.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: New Flowers exists only because artist Marisa Olson asked Messrs. Cohen and Emm to do something with her book Poems I Wrote While Listening to the Doors, 1992-1994 (Before I Found The Internet) - a tome which, and I have to be honest here, sounds quite awful. Thankfully they latched onto only one word: "flowers", and created the beautiful and predominately instrumental track that's (hopefully) now ringing in your ears.
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: You can listen to New Flowers on the Tanlines MySpace page, you can watch it on the Tanlines YouTube page and you can download it from brotherslife. Yep, these guys really have thought of everything, except maybe buying fake bronzer and wearing shirts instead.
