The Brits: all you need to know I Full shortlist of nominees I A brief history of controversy at the Brits I Full coverage
21:59 And that's it. So undeniably Duffy's night with three awards. Coldplay were elbowed out and left empty handed. Dunno how much they were paying Kylie, but she must have spoken about 100 words in total. As if by magic, the first advertisment on ITV after the show credits roll features, yep, Duffy for Diet Coke. Thanks for reading, I'm off for a soda...
21:55 The big screen zips through a montage of the Pet Shop Boy's most outlandish costumes and videos, before Brandon Flowers and a stage full of ballet dancers join them for pumping versions of It's A Sin and West End Girls.
21:50 Have the PSB's still got it? Of course they have. Neil Tennant is dressed all in black with the night's coolest dark glasses. Chris Lowe is wearing a pink Warhol wig. They're on stage alone with a synthesiser. They deliver a montage that includes Suburbia, You Were Always on Your Mind and a Go West.
21:48 Killers singer Brandon Flowers is on stage introducing electro-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, winners of Outstanding Contribution to Music. Nine studio albums, 22 singles in the UK, 50 million albums around the world. "They've got taste and they can write one helluva pop song" says Flowers.
21:42 Well that's it. Unlike previous years the awards seem to have passed off with absolutely zero controversy, which will probably please ITV, but hasn't made it a very exciting evening. And where was the M.I.A., Kanye, Jay Z, T.I., Lil Wayne moment? The Brits may have ruled last week's Grammys, but the Americans definitely put on a better show.
21:38: Arriving late on stage after "kissing and congratulating" Girls Aloud (lucky them), Tom Jones is presenting Best British Album of the Year. He's clearly got his favourite, and yes, Duffy wins for Rockferry. It's her third gong of the evening. "I'm going to keep it together for this one [she says as her voice nearly breaks], thank you very much. For the record I want to say that I travelled the country for this. I can't tell you what this means after five years, thank you so much." So it's three awards for Duffy from four nominations, and none for Coldplay. Millions of fans will be shedding tears. Rockferry was the best-selling album of 2008 and shifted 4.5 million copies around the world.
21:33 Entering the arena to Britney's Womanizer, Alan Carr is soon asking the crowd if they want to seem him naked. Erm, no thanks. He's awarding Best British Single. And the winner is... "Diana Vickers, oops wrong show sorry", it's Girls Aloud.
Everyone's reigning national treasures beat off competition from Coldplay and Duffy. It's their first ever Brit Award: "thank you so much to all our fans, we want to thank our record label, our management. It's about time! Thank you to everyone that voted, this is the cherry on the cake."
21:30 Soundclash alert! Ting Tings and Estelle mashing up That's Not My Name and American Boy. Definitely the musical highlight of the night. Katie White even slings her guitar into the crowd. Now that's rock and roll...
21:27 How to look good naked? Horne suggest: "shaving and sticking it between your legs". Very Silence of the Lambs. Gok Wan is on stage to plug his TV show, before presenting Best International Male. The award goes to Mr Kanye West, who sadly can't be here tonight. Accepting via video message the rapper compares himself to "best multi-racial male Barack Obama".
21:24 Horne is making his second terrible Craig David joke of the night (something about a Vauxhall Astra parked illegally). Are these the lamest presenters in Brit Award history? Aren't they meant to be comedians? Florence and the Machine, minus her machine, collects the Critics' Award.
