Who is he? Sam Duckworth, a 20-year-old Essex boy. Besides having one of the great band names of recent times, Duckworth stands out musically. His major-label debut single, I Spy/Call Me Ishmael, won a lot of admirers; its follow-up, the title track of his album, The Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager (Part One), should ensnare many more. Duckworth’s music never sits still, and his new single is all over the place, here a bit Tears for Fears, there a bit Outkast; one minute fragile folk, the next Aztec Camera-like pop heartbreak. Inspired by his quest-for-success gigging lifestyle last year, it begins, “Stuck in minor chords”, to a melody that is — you guessed it — in the minor key. An incredibly exciting new talent.
