Attend a special evening hosted by Mike Atherton
1. The O’Jays: Love Train (1973) So life-affirming that it was the song of choice at the 2008 Democratic National Convention when Hillary Clinton pledged her support for Barack Obama.
2. The Trammps: Disco Inferno (1976) By the time the opening cymbal breaks into the sliding bass, you’ll be making like John Travolta.
3. Odyssey: Native New Yorker (1977) Glitterball classic, paying homage to the divas of the Big Apple.
4. Donna Summers: I Feel Love (1977) “I’ve heard the sound of the future,” Brian Eno said to David Bowie when he heard this throbbing anthem for the first time.
5. Chic: Le Freak (1978) On New Year’s Eve 1977, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were turned away at Studio 54 (Grace Jones hadn’t left their names at the door). Dressed in their finest threads with nowhere to go, they went back to Rodgers’s apartment and wrote a song for the doormen, which began as “F*** Off”. A classic record was born.
6.McFadden and Whitehead: Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now (1979) A piece of pure 1970s disco, this well-loved hit is considered a celebration of the achievements of African Americans.
7. Sister Sledge: Lost In Music (1979) Reminds us all that pop music is the most important thing in the world.
8. The Jacksons: Can You Feel It (1980) A stomping dance number combining spine-chilling disco grooves, Michael and Randy’s soulful vocals and a triumphant choral opening.
9. Michael Jackson: Off The Wall (1980) The quintessential getting-ready-to-go-out- on-a-Friday-night song.
10. Indeep: Last Night A DJ Saved My Life (1982) An infectious hit. Forget the dodgy sound effects of a flushing toilet and enjoy.
11. Chaka Khan: I Feel For You (1984) This song was written by Prince, but he loved Khan’s version so much that he gave it his blessing.
12. Deee-Lite: Groove is in the Heart (1990) Featuring what may be music’s most famous slide whistle, this won the hearts of nightclubbers the world over.
13. Moloko: Sing It Back (1999) Put this on and try to sit still. The video featured lead singer Roisin Murphy dancing in a glistening metallic dress and matching hat.
14. Madison Avenue: Don’t Call Me Baby (1999) Disco’s nod to girl power.
15. Calvin Harris: Acceptable In The 80s (2007) Retro riffs, strained vocals and poppy tinkles from the man who boldly named his debut album I Created Disco.
