An hour of tango-techno music made in St Petersburg, Bulgaria and Berlin by an American-born singer-songwriter in cahoots with a Russian chamber orchestra might seem somewhat daunting. But Loved Hungry is nothing to be scared of.

Addie Brik’s scattered biography and magpie tastes help to make this a beguiling mélange of musical styles and sounds. At times it’s wantonly experimental, her voice cascading over the dissonant trip-hop of My Little Pony Ride; at others, such as on the laid-back samba-led I Get Home, it sounds as if P. J. Harvey and Björk have teamed up with Kate Bush. But Brik is at her best when everything is forced together: Fruit Fly overlays a snatch of Bach with stuttering electro-funk back beat and strings, while Rollin’ in the Jeckyl finds whispered entreaties battling with discordant pizzicato strings amid a Latin-flavoured arrangement. Weird, but often quite wonderful, too.
