Norah Jones: Not Too Late
When the second track on Not Too Late starts up with a 1930s big-band
jazz groove, it seems as though Jones has taken the opportunity on her third
album to change direction, or at least diversify a little.
The Cab Calloway-style swagger of Sinkin’ Soon has a sultry
energy, with Jones’s voice taking on a knowing, almost bawdy, tone that
suits it well. But the music returns straight afterward to the gentle,
wistful mood with which Jones has sold more than 30 million albums. There
are beautiful songs here, such as the hushed, country-tinged The Sun
Doesn’t Like You, reminiscent of the recent record by the Last
Town Chorus. But it would have been nice to hear Jones take the risks hinted
at on that second song.
