Rose Kemp: A Hand Full of Hurricanes
Given the current vogue for folk music, it would have been easy for Kemp to
set herself up as a faintly rustic singer-songwriter. After all, she has a
fine, strident voice and high-quality roots — her parents are Maddy Prior
and Rick Kemp, mainstays of Steeleye Span.
To Kemp’s credit, she has mostly spurned that option, preferring to study the
more tortured corners of P. J. Harvey’s catalogue. What is missing, sadly,
is Harvey’s talent. There are promising things here, notably the opening
Little One. But much of A Hand Full of Hurricanes manages,
curiously, to sound both anguished and rather bland — imagine a project on
Gothic confessionals that Katie Melua might have submitted while she was at
the Brit School for the Performing Arts.
