Amy Macdonald: This is the Life
Macdonald is a young woman with a big acoustic and a powerful voice. Touted as the new KT Tunstall, she has been fast-tracked through bars and clubs via the power of social network sites such as Bebo and a sympathetic Radio 2.
Her debut album crackles with enthusiasm and teenage zeal, not least on the idealistic title track and Let’s Start a Band. On the downside, her jangly indie folk not only recalls the Cranberries but shares the same embarrassing traits: naivety, moralising and overearnestness, most notably on Poison Prince, which hisses disapproval at Pete Doherty’s dissolute lifestyle, and the Clist celeb lecture Footballer’s Wife. Macdonald has a classical folk voice, but she needs to say more.
