You would think that Richey Edwards from the Manic Street Preachers carving “4 real” into his arm, in 1991, might have ended the British fascination with credibility. Yet the issue has grown, especially now that our leading musicians have stopped trying to sound American and started flaunting their regional accents. Just look at the Mercury prize nominations: Arctic Monkeys with gruff stories about Sheffield, Klaxons barking on about Dalston, and the East London council estate slang of Dizzee Rascal.
Now the 20-year-old Londoner Nash follows in that sarky slipstream with a debut album about bad boyfriends, best friends and big boozing – yet cynics have been asking if she is 4 real, too. Perhaps it is her fluttering dark eyelashes, or excellent piano playing, that lead them to wonder if her potty mouth and cockney intonations are genuine.
Well, she did study at the showbusiness BRIT School, but it was a free BTec, and she still lives at home in Harrow, North London – an area much less salubrious than its public school. She wrote these songs in her teens, and some might question her releasing an album so soon. The date was rushed forward to meet demand from her frenzied teenage fans and peers. But listening to the song Mouthwash, with its lyrics “I use mouthwash/ Sometimes I floss/ I’ve got a family/ Sometimes I drink cups of tea”, you do wonder if those fans couldn’t have waited until she had more than just five minutes to work on it.
Yet much of the record is glorious, and blessed with deep musical pockets. We Get On has a lovely doo-wop vibe, though Nash raging about sleazy tarts doing nasty stuff down at the park might ruin it for you if you are on the “eurgh, yeasty” side of her vocal Marmite divide. It all goes a bit Billy Ocean on S*** Song – “You could come round mine/ We could drink some wine/ In the summertime” – but soon reverts to typical Nash: “I think I might just drink the bottle myself/ Darling don’t give me s*** ’cos I know that you are full of it”. Elsewhere, Nicest Thing is a violin-stained weeper on which she finally, show-stoppingly, admits: “Basically I wish that you loved me.”
On the basis of this record, half the country will.

I think Kate Nash is Original and Unique which tecnolgy means the same thing.
I love her and so do all of my friends.
I'm in my teens and I know a girl that is several years older than me and she likes it too. Her music's audience is a wide range.
Merry Happy. Best song ever!
Georgia, Yeovil, Somerset
Are you kidding? This stuff is dreadful music. The lyrics would make a pre-tten blush and this horrible mock-cockney shtick that's being foisted on us is the most false crock the media has ever been responsible for.
Andy M, Liverpool,
There is one good track on this album, Foundations. The rest of it is wincingly ba-a-ad. Wincingly ba-a-ad. See what I did there? Repeated mys-e-e-elf. Honestly, this is dreadful, comparisons with Lily Allen aside. The plinky-plonk piano is hideous - I put on Ben Folds after listening to this. Now that's what I call a good singer-songwriter-pianist. Do yourself a favour and don't touch it. There are, I reckon, a max of 2 other tracks she can release - watch them bomb.
Robsa, Brighton, Sussex
Kate Nash is an individual, if the Times dont appreciate her lyrics they should at least appreciate that.
I think shes brilliant, all round. Her style is great and her lyrics are clever.
I love Kate Nash.
Kate, Leicestershire, England
I just want to disagree with your comment about the lyrics in "Mouthwash". Out of context, they sound ridiculous, but in context they are incredibly meaningful - about how the ordinary things in Nash's life provide her support and a sense of normality. It's a song about self appreciation.
Bryn Davis, Cardiff, UK
Kate Nash's album was the hardest album next to Kelly Clarkson's album that took me to get into.
But her album is good. 7/10.
Her lyrics are original, real, tell stories and make me laugh.
She is no where near like Lily Allen
I hope she does well with this album as many other British Female Artists are not having success with their albums except the fantastic Amy Winehouse.
Has Amy winehouse met her match on being the British Female artist of the moment? We will have to see when this coming sunday.
