The Go! Team: Proof of Youth
Ian Parton’s fantasy band actually came into existence only after the creation of 2005’s Mercury-nominated Thunder! Lightning! Strike! Yet its successor is as much of a sonic pile-up as that exhilarating debut, albeit heavier on the wailing guitars.
The single Grip Like a Vice is an exciting juxtaposition of Sonic Youth and Salt’n’Pepa, while the piano-led I Never Needed it So Much is almost conventional indie-soul. The instrumental My World approaches subtlety, but generally the Go! Team continue the great tradition of making pop music that is too exuberant to worry about distortion. This concise, strangely addictive set is unlikely to win new converts, but they remain unmistakable.
