The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday

Putting down her guitar for her eighth album, Harvey worked around her simple piano lines and some equally sparse rhythms. The results are inspired, closer to the non-rock of Radiohead’s Kid A, or the experimental solo offerings by her regular collaborator John Parrish, than her own back catalogue. The gorgeous title track and The Piano are standouts on a superb record that could probably bear the description “ethereal”.

Polly's performance last night was sublime, the new songs already sounding familiar. Being so different and interesting (her voice!) I found myself wanting to hear more new material rather than favourites.
It's a shame that White Chalk will only be bought by existing Polly fans rather than creating more, the sum of all the gloom and sadness creating an almost upbeat effect, maybe even some humour lurking in there- near genius!

There was a time, not so long ago (though you'd better not start counting the years), when listening to PJ Harvey in the same rooms as your parents would cause some trouble.
Well, White Chalk won't have that effect.
It's a little hard to say if it's bad or good. I'm not saying your parents would actually enjoy that record and go buy it to sit it next to the last Celine Dion's album, but it's obvious that's it's got a delicate quietness to it that will not wake up your neighbour.

The first is that it is pretty amazing how PJ manages to keep working in different ways, probably in moods that reflect her life at the moment of the recording, but it's great to see she never rests on her laurels, and she just keeps moving, diving in all risks...
That is somehow worrysome, because i sometimes don't know if I would enjoy this record as much if I di
