An Orson album is like a party invitation: receipt of it doesn’t compel you to attend, but not turning up and then complaining about the din is just perverse. Sure, you don’t look to the Californians for lyrical depth - Culture Vultures boils down to cliché-packed tales about girls sought, savoured, regretted or mislaid, and parties, lots of them. It’s the tunes that count. If Orson were skinny-hipped Hollywood teen love gods, instead of late bloomers of a certain age, they would top the American charts as well as our own. The best song here, the Motowny Broken Watch, is so good it hurts, and the bridge is a soft-rock masterclass. Other beauties include Little Miss Lost and Found and Gorgeous. Now, what to wear?
