The path leading away from television talent shows is littered with grisly musical debris: the remains of Gareth Gates; a half-melted tangle of metal and Hear’Say; Steve Brookstein. Being part-cyborg, Girls Aloud were always going to triumph over humankind, but otherwise there’s a general assumption that winning these shows equals a Christmas No 1, bargain-bin ignominy and ultimately, a hideous reality-show appearance, possibly involving Gillian McKeith. Some might call it the circle of life – especially if they were writing “inspirational” lyrics for the winner’s new album.
The people behind Leona Lewis, the comely winner of last year’s X Factor, are keen to stress that the 22-year-old Londoner is an entirely different kettle of stylists. Despite securing last year’s Christmas No 1 with the lachrymose ballad A Moment Like This, there was no attempt to rush-release her debut album. Instead, Simon Cowell, her X-Factor mentor and the executive producer of Spirit, allowed her to take her time, working with a glitzy array of producers and songwriters.
There is also evidence of the slightly pathetic fluster the British get into when America shows any interest in them: the record mogul Clive Davis told Cowell he might have “another Whitney Houston” on his hands and all efforts have been made to strengthen Lewis’s chances in the United States.
The “long-awaited” Spirit proves that Lewis, a stage-school veteran, certainly has Houston’s fondness for vocal curlicues, hitting notes so high that they can be heard only by divas. She has a powerful voice but on Spirit it seems to have paralysed her collaborators creatively. Instead of taking the opportunity to craft it into new and exciting shapes, it has been stuck in a big spotlit display case, revolving slowly and rather boringly on a velvet cushion of overstuffed balladry. Songs such as Footprints in the Sand, all crashing drums and gospel backing, or the crushingly earnest Yesterday, merge into each other, the kind of thing made to come out of the speakers in your local salon while you wait for the Saturday junior to shampoo your hair. You can almost smell the conditioner as she emotes through Angel or Take a Bow.
It’s a shame – everyone loves a rags-to-riches fairytale, and by all accounts Lewis is a sweet girl – but no surprise. Spirit pays quivering lip service to ideas of beauty and talent and “specialness”, but is ultimately too manufactured even to be great manufactured pop. If Lewis is looking for the greatest love of all – public adoration – she will have to do better than this.

leona is another r&b singer who sounds like all the rest of the other r&b singers her album was very dissapointing no I do not like leona gimme me better talent any night of the week with Amy winehouse as least she does not scream when she sings

Well Victoria is presumably eating her words now - amazing how critics cannot percieve greatness when it is staring them in the face. Probably due to the review being rushed - many songs cannot be properly appreciated on being heard for the first time.

She is amazing! Okay so her debut album may not be exactly just right and a few tracks let her down! But having said that considering she went from a receptionist to this instant pop singer shows that she must have been very nervous and willing to take advice from Cowell and other producers. However, as time goes on Leona will definetely break out into her own style but for a debut album it is fantastic. Where do you get tracks such as take a Bow or Bleeding Love? They are completely different to tracks released these days and Leona sums the album up nicely with fres edgy tracks like Take a Bow and also soft more smooth hits such as yesterday. Leona Lewis's time will come, and when it does all them critics will be eating their words.

I've been loyally keeping up with Leona's progress since I first watched her X Factor audition clip about a year and a half ago. It was quite clear even then that she would become an international superstar based upon her talent alone. I've been anticipating her US debut and am hoping even though the album itself is not necessarily masterpiece material, that her popularity continues to rise. I have high hopes that after this first album she is given a little more independence with what she releases and records, although no studio release will ever compare to her amazing live performances.

Wow. Well it's April 1, 2008. I find all these comments back when her album first came out to be amazing in their eagerness to put Leona down. She must have done something right, considering her single has gone on to be #1 in over 20 countries to include the US and she's already on her way to being one of the biggest music stars of our time.
Steven, Raleigh,
She is good, nothing more. Good voice, very attractive but awful, bland material. Amy, despite her problems is a genuine talent and far better than Leona.
However, neither compare to the truly great Dusty Springfield.
Peter, St Helens,
Leona has an incredible voice. But she adds so many "extra" notes into a song, it becomes irritating. It would be nice just to hear the lyrics without all the fancy bits thrown in by the bucketful.
Y
I expect I will be linched now.

I think everyone on this site must be tone deaf. Leona is by far one of the best singers to come from uk. i think i album is great that is pop dont forget. i think leona is great and cant wait to hear new material keep going gril
stewart watson, hartlepool united kingdom,
I agree with the latter comments Leona as good as she is is nowhere near celine, Whitney or Mariah carey and even christina aguilera she is very over-rated to the point where its getting irritating Ive even heard such ludicrous statements saying that she is better than these artists. However I do agree that the album does not do her any justice either. I wouldnt call myself a fan but I expected a bit more than this based on her performances on the show not the hype. The songs are not memorable If she is to have any chance of becoming a star she needs songs which will stand the test of time which these certianly will not. She also needs to showcase her voice more. Personally I dont think she is anything special however the album should make an attempt to leave a lasting impression to show she has something different. She seems a nice enough girl but they need to think of something better than this.
Mya, London,
Just been listening to this in tenerife ,great to hear by the pool superb vocals. This gril will be around for a long time to come .

LOL. Leona is NOWHERE near Whitney level. You have to be kidding if she is. Leona can't even beat Mariah Carey. How can she be on Whitney level. She can't even beat Christina Aguilera. Come on Simon. I agreed that Beyonce is an overrated singer. But to say that Leona is another Whitney is LUDICROUS!!!! wow. PROPAGANDA these days. SAD!!!!
