For such a famously proud city, it’s hard not to boggle at Liverpool’s susceptibility to flattery. Five years ago, when informed by a Benelux-based delegation of rimless-spectacle-wearing Eurocrats that it was to be made European Capital of Culture in 2008, the city’s reaction bordered on hysteria. But really, whose footsteps are we following in here? The European Capital of Culture for 2007 was Sibiu (along with Luxembourg). That’s Sibiu in Romania, which apparently boasts two theatres and an orchestra.
All of which may be worth bearing in mind tonight when the festivities kick off in earnest with a “once in a lifetime cast” featuring relics such as Pete Wylie, the Farm and, bless, poor old Ringo Starr. As the council bulldozers prepare to move in on his Toxteth birthplace, it’s amazing that Ringo deigned to return the call. In fact, the first song on his new album Liverpool 8 is an appropriately mawkish piece of autobiography: “When I look back, it sure was cool/For those four boys from Liverpool.”
God, you’d have to be deranged to go into a new Ringo Starr album expecting a masterpiece, but there are precedents for an affable Ringo album: Sentimental Journey, in 1970 and Ringo, his commercial peak, in 1973. There’s nothing wrong with the codgers-together ploditudes of Liverpool 8 that not actually releasing them wouldn’t put right. Just because it was fun to make, it doesn’t follow that you might enjoy listening to it.
On Give It a Try and Tuff Love the Ringo randomiser spews out sunny truisms: “In your heart/That’s where you gotta start.” On Love Is, the Beatley mellotrons are presumably there to tug at the heartstrings, but leave you unmoved precisely because you know that that’s what they’re there to do.
Thankfully, it isn’t a total washout. A moreishly corny Spanish vignette called Pasodobles and an agnostic campfire come-on to the grim reaper called R U Ready are worth 158 of anyone’s iTunes pence.
If the rest of Liverpool 8 had made similarly good use of its singer’s easy charm, it would have been a breeze. But listening to the Beatle for whom Paul McCartney wrote With a Little Help From My Friends, it all seems ironic. The Ringo of our mind’s eye remains inextricably intertwined with that Sgt Pepper vocal turn, but on the basis of Liverpool 8, he’d be better off making an album with his enemies.

Listening to this CD is awsome. You know Ringo is not those people who wanted money or getting thier songs up the charts all that Ringo is doing is to let his fans have some fun. I love the tune of 'Liverpool 8' and its the best song as well. Its one of the greatest album's by Ringo.
Thomas Stansfield , Sydney , Australia
Liverpool 8 is fun and easy to listen to... Ringo is an icon...but more importantly, he is a great entertainer...nothing more, nothing less. Keep making albums Ringo...and I'll keep buying them - regardless of what any reviews say...good or bad... and each time you come to town, I'm buying a concert ticket!

Ringo never pretended to be a a Mozart or a Beethoven of any kind. He is just a laid back easy going entertainer, and that is precisely what he does best : entertain us. Forget about pretentious masterpiece overtones or " over-tunes ", Ringo is just there to bright up your day, with easy melodies you can whistle along, while driving down the highway. And if there is an hidden message in his lyrics it is a message of love, don't we need a lot of it these days ? Ringo, you are the ultimate Rock 'N Roller : keep on rocking baby, and roll another tune for us on the road .

I like the tune of Liverpool 8. It's easy-listening. Brings back good memories of the young Ringo and the fabulous Beatles.

I think your reviewer should remove his ear plugs and his anti Ringo bias and actually listen to this feel-good, no pretence recording. The tunes are catchy and Ringo doesn't pretend to be anything other than what he is capable of. A very good enjoyable album from an artist who enjoys entertaining. Keep on going Ringo.

Livepool 8 is the fifth consecutive high quality CD from Ringo. It follows "Time Takes Time", "Vertical Man", "Ringo Rama" and "Choose Love". The melodies are catchy and his vocals are endearing with excellent pronunciation. Ringo Starr is not nearly as talented as Paul McCartney (who is), but Liverpool 8 verifies that he merited being a Beatle.

This new album from Ringo is excellent!
Goran Tivenius, Orebro, Sweden
Typical cliches from a reviewer who probably thought punk innovative and clever. Has Paphides ever listened to Ringo's albums? Has he listened to this one all the way through? References to Sgt Pepper suggest he could not be bothered to. It may not be "cool" to like Ringo but just because he was one of the 4 most successful musicians of the last 50 years doesn't mean they should be taken for granted or scorned. Truly anyone who likes popular music .. rather than what we are told to like - will like Liverpool 08. Give it a chance. You know the limits to most reviewers' talents already.
