Duffy: Rockferry - the Sunday Times review
Duffy appears to be fashioning a decent career for herself out of coming second. She came second on the Welsh alternative to Pop Idol back in 2004; she was second in a BBC poll of journalists to find the most likely breakthrough act this year; she was the second of the “new Amys” to release her debut, cunningly allowing Adele to suffer any critical backlash; and the Dusty-in-Memphis sound of Rockferry is her second attempt at establishing a musical identity after an early, unsuccessful EP. Collaboration with the producer Bernard Butler and a host of proven songwriters has resulted in an album sound that faithfully channels the mid1960s. Duffy’s voice fits right in (except on Distant Dreamer, which sounds strained) and, if Mercy overshadows everything else here, well, you could say the same about Rehab and Back to Black.
