“Charlie’s good tonight, innee?” It’s nearly 40 years since Mick Jagger pointed out that his drummer was rather special. His drummer? More recently, Watts heard Jagger refer to him as “my drummer”, and pointed out - forcefully - that actually Jagger was his singer. Watts makes this point even more forcefully throughout the concert captured here. While Jagger’s voice, and the guitar interplay between Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, can move from the sublime to the ridiculous at any moment, it’s the visceral thrill of Watts’s relentlessly powerful drumming that brings each song home. But then it’s the tension between Watts’s certainty and the just-off-the-beat randomness of his guitarists that has allowed the Rolling Stones to avoid becoming the bland corporate rockers that, by rights, they ought to be - and that entirely justifies yet another live album.
