Un Ballo in Maschera: Verdi: Covent Garden Chorus & Orchestra, cond Edward Downes: The Sunday Times Review
It was as the hero of Verdi’s Masked Ball that an unknown Canadian tenor, Jon Vickers, burst onto the opera scene in 1957, electrifying Covent Garden audiences. This live Ballo, from tapes in Lord Harewood’s collection, comes from five years later, by which time Vickers was an international star, famous for other Verdi roles as well. Maybe he was greater as Radames and Don Carlo than as Gustavo, which demands more elegance than he possessed. The intensity, though, the heroic ring of the voice, is thrilling. Ettore Bastianini is not at his best and Joan Carlyle’s Oscar is pallid, but Amy Shuard is a moving Amelia.
