John Lennon: Acoustic
So, what are we doing here, unearthing rare gems or scraping the bottom of the
barrel? A bit of both, actually. Acoustic pulls together acoustic versions
of songs from throughout Lennon’s solo career — mostly home demos — and is
clearly aimed at the hardened fan. The mid-career political stuff is as
second-rate as ever, but a couple of the later songs stand out: a delicately
sung Watching the Wheels and an even more delicately sung Real Love, clearly
preferable to the reheated Beatles version. Best, though, are the Plastic
Ono Band-era songs: beautiful takes on Love and Look at Me, a bitter Working
Class Hero and an ultra-lo-fi God, whose central message — “God is a concept
by which we measure our pain” — seems more relevant than ever.
