Neil Diamond: Home Before Dark - the Sunday Times review

Rick Rubin’s reinvention of Neil Diamond continues apace on this follow-up to 12 Songs, the album on which the producer reminded us (and Diamond himself) that he wasn’t just a bad, besequined showbiz joke, but could actually write songs. If 12 Songs was perhaps too earnest - unsurprisingly, given that it was designed to make us completely reappraise someone we had long since stopped thinking about - Home Before Dark allows itself a few lighter moments. Now we’ve accepted that he is a serious artist, Diamond feels able to remind us that he also used to write catchy pop fluff (brilliant catchy pop fluff) for the Monkees, so here we have tracks such as Forgotten, a bouncy little number that could easily be shaped to slip into a 1960s television soundtrack, alongside brooding ballads such as Another Day (That Time Forgot), on which he duets with one of the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines.
