Paul Weller: 22 Dreams - the Sunday Times review
That nee-naw, nee-naw sound you hear is the alarm that goes off every time a songwriter decides to make a double album. It’s the Big, Sprawling Mess alarm. And 22 Dreams certainly is a big, sprawling mess - but what a big, sprawling mess. The raw energy of the album suggests that, if we ran the tape back a bit, we’d hear Weller mutter “Let’s try a new one, it’s in E, just follow me”, before the musicians - dad-rock journeymen, we used to think they were - set off like the Band following Dylan, little nods and smiles across the studio as the magic happens. It’s as if one of modern music’s great control freaks has decided to take his hand off the rudder and just let the music out. Imagine his excitement when the music that does come out is as fresh and creative as the stuff he wrote 30 years ago. Actually, you don’t have to imagine: the excitement is infectious.
