Various Artists: Sweet Soul Music 1965
Soul music emerged from the ghetto in the early 1960s to dominate the black music scene. This snapshot from 1965, part of Bear Family's contribution to Black Music Month, shows the genre at its very peak.
From the Southern soul of Joe Tex and Otis Redding, the Chicago slickness of Fontella Bass and Tony Clarke to the streetwise New York sound of the Ad Libs and the jazz stylings of Ramsey Lewis, there's not a dud note to be heard. As befits a Bear Family product, the mastering and sound is pristine. Other years covered in this series are 1961-1964. As the Radiants would say, Voice Your Choice.
