That this British four-piece seem destined, for the moment at least, to achieve fame thanks to their current single, 5 Years Time, is both a blessing and, potentially, a curse. The song’s tweeness obscures the fact that the band’s debut is a much, much darker affair, for all that it comes wrapped in jaunty, brightly coloured apparel. Charlie Fink’s songs may gallop and gambol, possessing an innate melodiousness that keeps the momentum at a full-speed-ahead setting; but his lyrics, absorbed by death and decay, present a stark contrast that gives songs such as Shape of My Heart and Give a Little Love a genuinely sinister power. When the latter ends suddenly and brutally, the scenario it evokes has nothing whatsoever to do with dancing round maypoles. Instead, the abrupt termination suggests death itself, and there’s nothing twee about that.
