Free the Bees? Why? Is there a new supervillain in town, whose fiendish plan to conquer the world somehow involves imprisoning hugely talented and effortlessly eclectic bands who believe that all the good music happened between 1965 and 1968? Perhaps he wants to keep all the goodies on this album to himself.
Understandable, really, given that it hardly puts a foot wrong, from the soul ballad I Love You, through the sharp-edged pop of Horsemen, to the Revolver guitars that lure us into One Glass of Water and This Is the Land. If the relentlessly retro feel threatens to get a little claustrophobic at times, this is a small price to pay for the insane, funky catchiness of Chicken Payback — this year’s most irresistible three minutes.
