Chanelle Calica, the self-styled fastest MC in Britain, certainly hares out of the traps here, as if fleeing the attentions of her major label’s bean-counters and her green-eyed rivals-in-grime. For someone so gifted and fast-tracked, she has a lot to complain about. One Wish spits who’s-smiling-now mockery at her detractors, while Make It Easy, her audacious smash and grab on the Walker Brothers, slyly references her breakthrough riposte to Dizzee Rascal’s I Luv U. Much of it works (Step Back and Get Loose are genuinely innovative and disorientating); some of it screams “compromise”. But you can’t blame Shystie for finding it hard to reconcile a need to sell records with a wish to still hold her head up high in Hackney. If she doesn’t manage both, it’s not for want of trying.
