If you spend your time wondering “What would a Clash album produced by Phil Spector have sounded like?”, then here is both the band and the album for you. Admittedly, for the comparison to work fully, Joe Strummer would have to be less middle-class and more Scottish - but, really, it’s close enough. Since being “discovered” by Alan McGee at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, in Glasgow, Glasvegas have been this year’s Band Most Likely to Be Destroyed by the Hype. Amazingly, their debut album lives up to all the buzz, the band’s huge wall of sound matched by an impressive ability to squeeze epic grandeur out of lyrics that are actually, on closer inspection, full of doubts and fears. Certainly, there’s more depth here than in the last band McGee discovered at King Tut’s (oh, come on - Oasis) and nearly as much sing-alongability. An impressive start.
