If you have ever fantasised about a gilded collaboration between Prince and David Bowie, then TV on the Radio come lavishly recommended. Bowie sang backing vocals on the Brooklyn quintet's second album, though that record was so dense it was hard to spot him. The follow-up, however, finds this art-rock band fulfilling their promise. The ballads, such as Stork & Owl, have an ornate gravity that recalls Bowie circa Scary Monsters. But Dear Science really comes alive when TV on the Radio sound sharper, angrier and funkier than they have done before. A thrilling album.

Early Prince and 80's Bowie can be found mostly in the amazing single "Golden Age". But TVOTR does more than update their influences, they stand on the shoulders of giants (just look at the Golden Age video), and move modern music forward musically-lyrically more than any band has done in a decade.

Scott: I think you've misunderstood what a ballad is.
Tom, London,
Can't recall Dear Science, having a ballad called 'Stork & Owl'. Pretty sure the only remotely Radiohead-inspired piano-driven brilliance on the album is called 'Family Tree'.
