At their recent Brixton Academy show, Kings of Leon played to an audience so socially and generationally varied that, their extraordinary new album aside, it seemed clear the Followills were poised on the cusp of superstardom. (The entry of their new single, Sex on Fire, at No 1 confirms this.) I say “aside”, but removing Only by the Night, the band’s fourth album, from the equation, however temporarily, is impossible. It is, in short, a monster, waiting to be uncaged by huge record sales. But it’s a monster with subtle qualities, which are already being overlooked (a common KoL oversight). For every stadium-ready, U2-big track such as Crawl or Use Somebody (on which the catch in Caleb Followill’s voice as he sings “I hope it’s going to make you notice someone like me” is positively brutal), there is a song as strange and multilayered as Seventeen, which, dodgy lyrics notwithstanding, points up the band’s burgeoning dynamic dexterity. Or Cold Desert, which takes the blues of the group’s Southern roots as its base, but makes out of them something almost ambient and wholly devastating, and offers yet more proof of what a powerful singer Caleb is. Or Revelry, a track that from the first note lets you know it’s zeroing in on the despair that often coexists with the fun the song’s title seems to describe. A hugely important album by a hugely important band.

The all American long haired rockers have done it again and released another brilliant album. Guitar riffs that left you wanting to hear more and drum fills which can only be described as amazing. A must buy for sure.
Dan Brian, denham, England
this album is testament to musicians who actually have talent- they'll keep releasing decent material and dont fade into papness.
Journey or Chicago?
these fellas sound like the Kings Of Leon, make no mistake.
I think there's certainly something there for the new listeners- a great album.

Absolutely, Alan.
A lot of hype surrounds this latest sensation.
There is nothing here to excite the new listener, strictly for camp followers.
edwina langton, higher wheelton.,
Because of the times was much better, because it contained songs that stuck in the memory long after you'd heard them. Only the first three and last song had that effect on me. Nowadays they are (worryingly) starting to sound a bit like Journey or Chigaco
Phil Hammond, Manchester, England
I think this is the best band around and have the potential to be as big as the stones. Their sheer confidence in their music is infectious and the new albums hits harder and deeper that the previous ones. Im still struggling to understand why others dont share my passion for them!!

This was given 2 stars by The Times on Sep 20th. 3 (average) is more realistic
Alan, Dublin,
I am so glad this review was done. So many people expected another rocking album which it is, just on a different level. I think it's brilliant the way they have branched out to show just how amazing they truly are. Their other albums are all similar...now they are showing their true talent.
