The Royal Oak: Best of Folk - The Sunday Times review
When the Edinburgh Fringe’s ticketing system collapsed in August, the staff of the Royal Oak, holding together a crammed programme of acoustic music in the face of administrative chaos, symbolised perfectly the smaller promoters’ Dunkirk spirit. Here’s a long-overdue celebration of the venue, with specially recorded tracks from the rising Orcadian star Kris Drever, local indie-rockers Aberfeldy, and those hardy perennials Martin Boland and Alan Hunter, along with snatches of scene-setting crowd clatter. Carolyn Anona Scott’s Will Ye Go Lassie Go, the album’s highlight, is possessed of the spine-tingling stillness found only in genuinely unalloyed folk music.
