Sibelius: Symphonies No 1, No 4 - London Symphony Orchestra cond Colin Davis - the Sunday Times review
Perhaps Sibelius’s Fourth — the work he wrote when brought face to face with his possible imminent death, and whose composition he called “a quest into the infinite recesses of the soul” — will never not sound strange. It certainly does in this bleak and searing performance, recorded live at the Barbican in July. Davis’s readings are becoming more powerful, more subtle, more Sibelian, as he ages. The Second, with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra at this summer’s Proms, eclipsed any of his previous versions; No 1, here, is equally uncompromising. The work’s debts to Tchaikovsky, once made so much of, recede with the years. It is authentic Sibelius. I regret only that the recording lacks clarity in the most fully scored passages; the timpani are often too loud.
