As if once being the drummer in one of the greatest bands of all time weren’t misfortune enough, now Dave Grohl has to cope with fronting a group propelled into rock’s premier league without really deserving to be there. In Your Honour maintains the downhill creative momentum from the peak of 1997’s superb The Colour and the Shape. This is a bloated and hubristic affair, divided into “rock” and “acoustic” sections, and its 20 songs cruelly expose Grohl’s weakness as a singer and meagre talents as a writer: the rock is pristine, pellucid, where it needs to be rank and opaque; the acoustic overearnest and lyrically limp. Disc one’s The Deepest Blues Are Back and two’s Norah Jones collaboration, Virginia Moon, hint at a better (shorter) album. Sadly, this isn’t it.
