Elgar: Nursery Suite - RCM Junior Dept SO, cond Mark Elder; LSO, cond Edward Elgar
Whoever had the idea, it was a brilliant one — to record, for the Queen’s 80th birthday, the Nursery Suite that Elgar wrote in 1931 for the then Princess Elizabeth and her sister, and issue it coupled with Elgar’s own recording.
The vernal charm of these reworked sketches from his youth (including The Wagon Passes, Anthony Payne’s inspired choice for the ending of the unfinished third symphony) makes two hearings nothing but a pleasure.
Under Mark Elder, the Royal College’s teenage students do the work proud.
The LSO of 78 years ago, with their shorter notes and clearer textures, may give Aubade a greater spring in its step, but the RCM players’ Dreaming, taken at Elgar’s metronome tempo (Elgar’s performance is faster), has greater tenderness.
